Wrap Carries by Length and Where to Start

Posted by Chris Cox on

So you want to wear you baby in a wrap, but you don't know what length you need and what carries you can do with each length. In this article you will find a fairly detailed list of carries by wrap length.
Depending on your body type, you may require a wrap one size shorter or longer. I have done my best to make sure the list is complete, but there may be a few more carries out there that were missed. The size length may very slightly from one manufacturer to the next, but usually within .2-.3 meters.
Before we begin though you may have a question that goes something like this, "Which wrap length can I get the most out of? Which length can I do the most carries with?" Well this is where we determine your "base size" which is what most people start out with. This is the long wrap that you can do your base set of carries with. Depending on body type, most people's base size will be a size 5, size 6 or size 7. And really we aren't looking at how many carries you can do with this length, but which carries. My base size is a size 6. I'm 5'4" and weigh about 140-145 lbs.
Your next question is "How in the heck do I learn to wrap this long piece of beautiful fabric around me and make it secure enough to keep my baby from falling out?" Youtube is a great place to look. There are tons of instructional videos out there to help you see how to wrap a specific carry and work out the kinks. You can practice with a doll or stuffed animal before trying it with baby too. Another great resource is to search for a local babywearing group in your area. Check Babywearing.com or other babywearing websites to find groups that have meetups where you can get help learning to wrap and maybe even try a wrap or other baby carrier before you decide which one to buy first.
